Lucky Girls: The Greek Orthodox Orphanage in Calcutta

Source: Lucky Girls

This site was built to raise funds for the Greek Orthodox Orphanage in Calcutta. The fundraiser has passed, but the video that they produced reveals the blessed work they are doing for orphaned girls in Calcutta.

From the website:

Lucky Girls was filmed in January 2009 with the purpose of raising funds and awareness for the Greek Orthodox Orphanage in Kolkata, India. Lucky Girls is a 16-minute film that explores the plight of the young Indian girl-child and quilts the remarkable stories and dreams of the girls from the orphanage. The film esthetically wraps around the hearts of the viewers, inviting them into the touching and vivid lives of the girls. It was filmed and produced by volunteers from America with the blessings of Sister Nectaria, the co-founder of the orphanage

  1. Thanks for your post about the Lucky Girls! I am the producer of the film, and I was scared to read “the fundraiser” has passed. I think you may have been referring to one of the girls we featured on the film. I am the main fundraiser through the Lucky Girls campaign, but still alive, thank God!

Beautiful film, Christiana. A gorgeous and moving piece of work. Is the fundraiser still going?

  3. Thank you, Father! I think I misunderstood your original post. Yes, we are always fundraising for the orphanage. Were you interested in getting a parish involved?

  4. Fr. Johannes Jacobse

My little parish can only support one missionary now and even that is only a modest contribution. (We are following the example, model really, of All Saints Orthodox Church in Illinois.) However, I would be glad to help promote your work.

Now I understand what you meant too. I meant that the fundraiser had been completed.

  5. My husband and I will be visiting Calcutta in February of next year and would like to visit the school/center. Does anyone know how we should go about it. meaning do we need permission, and if so from who? Also, can we take any gifts for the girls and the center? Thanks.
    Amita

Hunting around I found a local contact affiliated with the orphanage:

Try contacting St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church in San Jose, CA for more information:

Hello! You can also email me directly, and I can put you in contact with Sister Nectaria. I produced Lucky Girls and am in communication with Sister. christiana@theluckygirlsmovie.com

Are they in need of any volunteers? I am a secondary education social sciences major at the University of Northern Colorado and I would be interested in volunteering here for a summer. Are internships possible?

Julia, try contacting them at the links in the comments above. That’s the only info we have.

    2. Hi Julia. You can contact Sister Nectaria directly at srnectaria@hotmail.com
Also, the link to the orphanage and all the operations with the church in India can be found here: http://thepsoc.org/
You will also be able to find more contact information on that website. If you’d like to get involved in our upcoming Lenten project that involves making + selling friendship bracelets at your college, I would love to involve you! You can email me: christiana@theluckygirlsmovie.com

That sounds wonderful! Thank you so much for the information! I will be contacting you (Christina) and Sister Nectaria about possibly volunteering at the school this year and about helping out with the friendship bracelets. Again, thank you so much and God Bless!
