Professor Andrew Morriss is D. Paul Jones, Jr., and Charlene A. Jones Chairholder in law and professor of business at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He received his PhD in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, his JD and MPA from the University of Texas in Austin, and his AB from Princeton University. He has written extensively on environmental issues and is the author or coauthor of more than 50 scholarly articles, books, and book chapters. He serves as a Research Fellow at the New York University Center for Labor and Employment Law, a Senior Fellow at the Property & Environment Research Center in Bozeman, Mont. and a Senior Scholar at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.

Excerpt from the book:

Everything in creation exists by sharing in and manifesting God’s energies: created things are beautiful by sharing in and manifesting God’s beauty; true by sharing in and manifesting God’s truth; good by sharing in and manifesting God’s goodness; and so forth. This means … that every created thing can be a theophany—a revelation of God.

What does this say about nature? About any creature? It says that nothing is simply an object to be used, an inert, meaningless thing. Everything, every creature—from spotted owls to veins of coal in a mountain—shares in the energies of God. It says that somehow God is present and can be discerned there, if we can see, not only with our eyes but also with our hearts…. We must also remember that Christianity is not Jainism—we are not called to gently sweep insects from our paths for fear of inadvertently stepping on one. Rather we are called to stewardship, an active role in which we must do more than preserve what God has given to us but responsibly and prayerfully use it in pursuit of our responsibilities to God and our brothers and sisters.

Sometimes a good steward husbands a resource. Sometimes, however, a good steward makes use of a resource in pursuit of the steward’s calling. Orthodox environmentalism cannot thus be a static vision of nature as something to be preserved unaltered. A steward’s task is much harder than either digging up every last lump of coal or refraining from touching any of it. In entrusting us with responsibility for the natural world, God gave us opportunities to exercise judgment, not a simplistic recipe. While life would surely be simpler if he asked less of us, it would leave us as less than he intended us to be. (30–31)

    My wife downloaded the book for me on her iPad. Only time so far to skim it. Looks quite interesting and a needed antidote to prevailing sentimentaluem of too much of modern Orthodox thought. I’m sure I’ll have questions once I have time to read it in depth.

  2. To get an idea where this is coming from: PERC is a libertarian institution that promotes “pro business”, market based models. It has a long track record that is available for anyone to see. If you want your ideological fixations baptized no doubt you will find this appealing. If you start with the Fathers I suspect less so. Though I have read here before that “free market” ideology trumps the Fathers.

    Greg, I for one plan on reading the economic part of the book with a critical eye. Suffice it to say that much of the writing on the environment from an Orthodox perspective has taken a ideological position that is different than what you object to, but none the less ideological.

    It is a challenge for we mere humans to avoid ideological bias, nearly impossible actually. So it is not the presence of ideology that bothers me, that is only to be expected, but the degree in which the ideology is recognized and its difficulties worked around.

    There is no question that the “earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof” which the writers seem to recognize in the beginning of their book. If one keeps that in mind and does not descend into the materialist idea that all of nature is ours and can be capitalized and abused as we see fit, there is no reason not to use our ability to create and trade to build something more than what we had before. Indeed, to me, that is part of the command to us in Genesis to “dress and keep the earth” and is also and extension of the command to be fruitful.

    Our age is an age of ideology as Solzhenitsyn pointed out years ago. Whether the ideology is economic, political, scientific or philosophical, they share one thing in common, the desire to make the human mind, God. The subsequent tyranny and dehumanization (paradoxically) that comes from that is seen in the world around us. The Romanian Orthodox playwright, Eugene Ionesco made that point in a brilliant play, Exit the King, back in the 1960’s. My encounter with that play was an important point on my journey to the Church. Man’s will destroys, God’s will alone gives life–life in abundance and inexhaustible.

    One of the crucial aspects of the book that I have been able to discern so far is the centrality of thanksgiving that the authors maintain in our approach to the rest of the created world.

    Materialist economic philosophies such as communism, socialism, mercantilism, fascism, darwinistic/crony capitalism, or Calvinistic capitalism that partakes of the Gnostic hatred of matter lead to the despoliation of the earth and reduce the its natural abundance.

    Keep in mind: abusus non tollit usum: abuse does not destroy use.

    Is there anything wrong with using capitalist principals in a God inspired way to alleviate suffering, protect and enhance the natural world and build a world with less want?

    Is there any other economic philosophy that you see that will do better? (putting aside your own ideological bias as best you can).
