Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco “emphatically denies” support for California bill – AOI – The American Orthodox Institute – USA

Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco “emphatically denies” support for California bill

The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco corrected the misleading press release put out by California Church Impact that claimed Orthodox support for a bill sexualizing science education in the California public schools. We thought the Metropolis was not aware their name was being misused in this way and once it was brought to their attention they clarified the record.

STATEMENT FROM METROPOLIS REGARDING CALIFORNIA SENATE BILL 48

The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco has been a member of various faith based organizations with the purpose of witnessing and sharing the teachings of our Christian Orthodox Faith. Membership in such organizations, however, does not mean that the Greek Orthodox Church accepts or supports initiatives that may be taken by a particular organization.

Recently, the Los Angeles Times reported on an initiative being encouraged by the California Council of Churches. Since that article has been published, other news agencies have picked up the announcement questioning the statement, “Greek Orthodox Church supports gay-themed science education?” The lobbying efforts of the California Council of Churches are being spearheaded by California Church Impact. This lobbying group has wrongfully represented the Greek Orthodox Church and Her teachings regarding gay, lesbian and transgender acceptance.

The Los Angeles Times has reported that the Greek Orthodox Church supports California Senate Bill 48, that is winding through the California State Legislature to “study of the role and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans…to the economic, political and social development of California and the United States of America, with particular emphasis on portraying the role of these groups in contemporary society.” The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco emphatically denies participating or making any statement in support of that effort.

The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco is dedicated to the teachings established by our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ as confessed by the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. The teachings of the Christian Orthodox Church are based on Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition that affirm that God has created male and female in His image and according to His likeness (Genesis 1:27-31). It is in the love and mercy expressed by Jesus Himself that we offer our spiritual care to all humanity.

We believe that God calls all people to holiness (Eph. 1:4; 1 Pet. 1:15-16). In as such, one’s conduct and moral principles must be in harmony with Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition. Supporting any initiative for a study on the moral and political influence of a way of life contrary to Christian Orthodox teachings cannot be accepted.

    Bravo, San Francisco!

Wasting no time with confusion, they set the record straight quickly. Thanks and well done.

  2. Always good to see unambiguous leadership.

  3. Welcoming the corrective press release, the matter of importance becomes: did the publications with large circulations and readership that printed the original mistake print the correction, or is the press release one released only to those upset– leaving the majority who read the original article with the wrongful impression?

The press release is most welcome! Looking at the California Council of Churches advocacy issues on their website there are certainly more than a few that are cause for concern. Just how much money is the Metropolis spending on dues and other support for this organization?

On another note, AOI as a news agency????? Father, you have come a long way……………..

  5. Another wonderful result by the relentless efforts of Fr. Hans! Hear, hear!!!

    1. Yes. Still, unless those who published the wrong thing to millions publish the corrective press release: it’s only half a car. Has the Met. Of S.F. delivered the release and called the various big papers looking for a correction? If not, then it’s a gesture to critics, not meant to be effective where the damage was done. Much as there was no article (at least that I found) where the Met. in the newspapers up and down CA who published his positive signal for gay marriage published also his participation in a larger group retraction. The public’s idea of what the church is there I think goes un-corrected.

Well done, indeed Fr. Although I fear that Harry is on to something, the fact that the GOA diocese in question corrected the assertion is a credit to them. And yes, Fr Hans and the AOI do deserve the credit regardless.

Well, there are people that might havw contributed that are gay. But his is not known. Take Roman history Suetonius claims almost all the first twevle Caesars were bisexaul but one doesn’t study the contributions of Augustus Caesar because he may had a few gay sexual encounters.

    Cynthia,

    Your point?

  8. cynthia curran

The contributions of indivduals in society should not be based upon whether they are gay or not. Why support a study of histroy based upon
    sexuall practices.

  9. cynthia curran

Gee, I misread this I thought it was talking about history not science.

  10. Terry Mattingly just recently posted about this on GetReligion if anyone is interested and would like to comment: http://www.getreligion.org/2011/04/greeks-back-gay-education-push/

“The measure is backed by California Church Impact, a group whose members include the Episcopal Church, the United Church of Christ, the Greek Orthodox Church and others. But lawmakers have been flooded with letters of opposition from groups including the California Catholic Conference, the First Southern Baptist Church and the Thousand Oaks Christian Fellowship.”

Strictly speaking, this statement is perfectly accurate. The Greek Orthodox Church is a member of California Church Impact which is backing the measure. That’s bad enough.

It is nice to hear that GOARCH is not explicitly backing the California Church Impact position and, in fact, has stated that this position is at odds with Orthodoxy. But the question then becomes, “Why let yourself be used as a legitimizing token for a pseudo-Christian front?” The answer we normally get is not too convincing. “We are there to witness the Orthodox faith to separated brethren.” Fine. Join “Claim the Blessing” too, or an organization of “Christians” for “choice”. Lots of witnessing needs to be done there. What’s the difference between those organizations which advocate unorthodox morality and CCI which advocates unorthodox morality? In a way, CCI and the WCC and NCC are worse. Claim the Blessing dares to be evil on one issue, as does, for example, Catholics for Choice. CCI/NCC/WCC dare to be evil on quite a few issues.

Lying down with dogs makes it highly likely you’ll catch fleas. This puts into focus the inherent foolishness of ecumenism. Does anyone in his right mind think we are convincing progressives to adopt Orthodox theology or morality? No. So apart from giving us prominence, does anything good result? No. Is it good to be perceived prominently as taking common cause with those who despise Christian morality? No.

So why in the world are Orthodox Churches members of these morally despicable organizations?
