Churches are not “forbidden” from preaching about politics, you just lose your privilege of being a tax-exempt charitable organization if you become a political activists.

Pastors have a responsibility to their Bishops and parishioners to speak the Truth with charity without regard for whether the IRS would invalidate the parish’s tax-exempt status. If a pastor has crossed the line, the Bishop and parishioners should make that determination, not the IRS.

While I unquestioningly support the right of churches and pastors to speak to issues of social morality and even politics, I have no interest in hearing partisan rants from my priest. Too often, in my judgment, pastors on the left and the right confuse speaking to political matters with speaking in a partisan fashion, as if being a “good Republican” were required in order to be in good standing with the church. If homilies in my parish became no more than an opportunity for my priest to rant and rave about partisan politics, I would find a new parish ASAP.

Liberal politicians have no problem invading churches and speaking on the stump. Those who are not liberal must have the same right. Period.
