Do you want Congress to pass the House healthcare reform bill or something similar to it?
It is my hope that AOI readers will participate in this poll and let their voice be heard.
]]>Having said that, the minefields are not insignificant. I simply don’t see how the Stupak Amendmant will survive a Constitutional challenge. And let us not forget, the abortion coverage will always, somehow, in someway, and some day, find its way back into government subsidized healthcare.
There are several reasons for this but I will just give three:
1. If the gov’t (or any 3rd party for matter) has the monopoly on healthcare, then it will exact its pound of flesh from the womb to the tomb. We see this in all the European countries that have socialized care. Euthanasia at the very least is necessary, a cruel necessity perhaps, but a necessity nonetheless. Therefore it will become an inevitability.
2. The moral collapse of the family makes abortion just as necessary. About 100 years ago, Chesterton said, “there are two forces in civilization: the family and the state. Eventually one will win over the other.” The nuclear family is anathema to the leviathan state as the father is the sole provider for his family. In Leviathan’s eyes, this is an affront to him. Hence, it is a phenomenon of modern society that Leftist parties have aligned themselves with whatever moral position exists that will undermine the family. Abortion, feminism, homosexual “liberation,” welfarism, etc. For better or worse, the Democratic Party in the US (and the Communists in Russia, the Nazis in Germany, Social Democrats in Europe, etc.) have adopted this program as their own. The Church used to be the bulwark of the family but for all practical purposes, the Christian commonwealth has ceased to function.
3. Therefore, the Stupak Amendment will ultimately die. Maybe not this year, but once it has outlived its usefulness, that is to say, getting government control of healthcare passed the finish line, then it will be expunged. If nothing else, it will become a dead letter.
As far as “immigration reform,” that is simply another way of the elites trying to dilute and undercut the nation and the family as it is constituted. Working men used to be able to support their families on their wages, but no more thanks to unrestricted illegal immigration. As such, the temporary alliance between the Left and the Church (esp. the Catholic Church) will be ultimately to the Left’s advantage and the Church’s chagrin, as this is but another salient to help destroy the American family, thereby exacerbating the moral problems that plague America at present. Problems which by the way, create the “need” for government health care.
