It appears that the police shooting of Mark Duggan was the immediate cause of the riots that are now occurring in England. But there were also underlying causes for these riots — especially the anger of British residents resulting from the downfall of England’s welfare state.

The news media in America has been “low-key” in covering the worst riots to occur in England in over a half-century — either because England is America’s closest ally, or because the media is afraid that a similar situation may be “brewing” and could occur anytime in the United States.
