If you don’t know anything about the Church of Indonesia, or if you know only a little, read through the new and improved Friends of Indonesia website. This is one compelling story! It’s amazing what is going on there, 33 parishes and missions. Fr. Daniel Byantoro, who I finally got to meet and know during my debate in Maryland (he attended), is accomplishing work that is impressive, maybe even miraculous. Certainly the Lord is with him in his efforts.

Fr Daniel deserves our prayers and support. He was treated abominably by the previous metropolitan of Hong Kong (who for some reason was replaced sometime later by somebody else).

I met Fr Daniel last year when he spoke to my parish. He is a great resource for insight into Islam, since he came from that religious culture. He also was very free with his opinion about the Greek administration of Indonesian churches. The Indonesian gov’t seems to prefer to deal with locals like Fr. Daniel rather than aliens like the former Metropolitan of Hong Kong.
I think the administration of Indonesian Orthodox churches by ROCOR makes a lot more sense than that by Istanbul, for the simple reason that the Russian Orthodox legacy of sensitivity to foreign cultures is pretty much unmatched worldwide. From what Fr. Daniel told me, the Greeks were primarily interested in control and gave short shrift to evangelizing. ‘Nuff said.
