On September 10, 2011, St. Joseph Antiochian Orthodox Church in Houston, Texas, hosted the 2011 Orthodox Christian Parenting Retreat. The speaker was Fr. John Peck, priest at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Prescott, Arizona, and the topic was “Orthodox Christian Parenting in the 21st Century: Guiding, Guarding, and Discipline for Parents, Grandparents, and Godparents in the Orthodox Tradition.”

I don’t know how many took the time to listen to Father John, but, while I can be frequently “skeptical” when I see the label “Orthodox” anything – and this harkens back to the now ancient booklets, “An Orthodox View on Busing,” and “Why Orthodox Christians May Not Pray for the Soul of Leo Tolstoy” – this is an excellent series, and Fr. John is affable, warm, and you could even say “charming.” But he is unmistakably “Orthodox.” A very worthy listen. In my opinion…

I would have to strongly concur with M. Stankovich’s review of Father Peck’s class. I am a single Orthodox Christian male who works in nursing. And trust me, being the minority in a very pink collar profession, I have heard it all – from the single mom with kids (and there are many in this profession), to the spoiled married American female who works part-time and is sponsored by her industrious loving husband, to the bar-hopping one-night-stand jezebels who want “the bad boy.” Father Peck nails it on the head. I listened to each of the four parts very intently, and now I am certain that the married life isn’t for me. I’d rather “have breakfast with the Captain.” Thank you very much, Father Peck, for your wonderful four-part class!
