When conversion to Byzantinism demands both a rejection of one’s own traditions and ethnicity perhaps it is normal that converts to Byzantium love submission and self-loathing.

It’s even sadder when you hear the stories told in person, by the participants.

I remember exactly where I was when I read that story….because it was the first time in my life I had ever been embarrassed to be Greek.

In the years since then, I’ve often wondered, “Can you imagine the future in store for those responsible for this?”

I’m more inclined to pray for them, than to be angry at them. We cannot possibly conceive what God has planned for them. All i know is that I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

Kyrie Eleison.

Best Regards,
Dean

Although he is in fact very fluent in English when he speaks to the Greek Orthodox Christians in the United States, he addresses them in Greek although the vast majority is not fluent in Greek. His All Holiness does not address his flock in America as “my beloved spiritual children” or “my beloved Orthodox brothers and sisters,” but rather he addresses them as “OMOGENIA” (people of the same race) or in other words “my fellow Greeks.”

Every Orthodox Christian needs to remember the above very clearly. The GOA and its leadership operate on a principle of Omogenia before Orthodoxy that is race before faith. People who are not part of the “special race” omogenia may be tolerated in the GOA but they are ultimately considered second class citizens. For the GOA its about maintaining racial purity.

Its all really a tragedy. I feel so bad for the Greek Orthodoxy Clergy and Leaders of today who have been fed these fantasies for years. They are trapped in the Golden Prison of large paychecks and suburban lifesyles. Their spirit worn out by a system tears down and controls rather than builds up and liberates. These clergy and leaders now have to continue to promote these fantasies to a new generation to keep the money flowing.

However in the America of 2010 demography is destiny and the world is changing. Outside the fantasy world of 79th Street and the Greek Press the Omogenia before Orthodoxy mentality is rapidly coming apart. People do not speak ancient or modern Greek, they marry who they wish, and they view their faith as a choice. Omogenia is just something that entertains you at the local Greek food festival these days. Omogenia is just nostalgia. Nostalgia not for the real Greece and her people because the GOA cannot handle the real Greece and its real problems. Omogenia is nostalgia for a fantasy world.

In an age when America elected an African American President, the GOA looks more backwards than ever with its omogenia before Orthodox Mentality. No amount of “Gather my people home” conventions or blue ribbon mixed marriage task forces are going to delay the impending collapse of the Omogenia before Orthodoxy mentality.

American Orthodoxy is here and its alive and growing. The next generation of leaders are not going to be Greeks like Eliphidorios Lambrinadis with their elitist outlook. The next generation of Orthodox leaders are not going to care about Omogenia. They will care about building the Church in America one person and one parish at a time.

The word Greek in Greek Orthodoxy is going to look alot like the word Roman in Roman Catholic. Nobody today would ever think the Roman Catholic Church is just for Romans. In the future, nobody will think the Greek Orthodox Church is just for Greeks.

And just like the Roman Catholic Church which elected a Polish Pope. I am sure that we will one day see a non-Greek elected Ecumenical Patriarch and a non-Greek elected Archbishop Of America and primate of the GOA.

I also suspect that all of this will happen much sooner than anyone can possibly imagine.

I had the pleasure of meeting one of the men who made that arduous journey. Trust me, Gillquist’s narrative of the event –though true–was softened considerably in order to not reflect even more poorly on certain people. Perhaps the lampstand is being removed as we speak.

I can only hope that there is more to it than that, but – on the face of it – it’s troubling. And to travel all that way without receiving either an audience or explanation would seem to be very bad form. As I said, I can only hope that there is more to the story that what is presented.

IF the Church actually did choose to serve a government – any government – rather than Christ, wouldn’t it be guilty of treason? It might still be the Church, but it has risked placing itself under the threat that Christ Himself will remove its lampstand from its place.

This story needs to be told and re-told. If nothing else future generations of hierarchs will learn from this episode how not to run a church.

Is any comment necessary?

Except that the massacre at Ligonier was foreshadowed.
