No crazy talk of catacombs, but rather, “Here is our situation, we must be the Church.” It was very sad to read, “So far they are virtually united, but already in some Orthodox jurisdictions priests are beginning to take positions. For example, a priest of the Orthodox Church in America in Boston is talking about the possibility of accepting same-sex couples.” I won’t bother arguing the veracity of his statement, but shame on Priest Robert Arida for not clarifying his position one way or another. The fact that anyone would have to state that the Orthodox in America are “virtually united” in regard to the issue of same-sex marriage is a judgement upon all of us. And it isn’t as if there are not calls for clarification – Robert Arida has been foolishly demanded an accounting for every heresy from the First Council forward, for heaven’s sake – but not a single word from anyone with authority. Aye, there’s the rub. Until that changes, there are tears in heaven, at least from the Russian philosopher Khomiakov, who began that church’s emergence from an extended apathy similar to ours with an essay titled in four simple words, “The Church is One.” I believe there is a lesson here.
