Metropolitan Hilarion has made a much bigger different for world Orthodoxy in his present role than he ever would have as the diocesan bishop of Sourozh, which was Patriarch Alexy’s original plan. I suppose the rupture this caused in the British Church was God’s plan to give Met Hilarion greater use of his gifts. The diocese still split upon the death of Met. Anthony, because with Met Anthony not there to object and protect his flock, Alexy could still parachute a non-English-speaking bishop onto the episcopal throne, but by then Hilarion had been moved on to his commendable roles in Brussels and Vienna.
