Five Anglican bishops quit Church of England for Rome

Five bishops have resigned to join the Roman Catholic Church as an exodus of Anglicans begins.

The five will convert to Roman Catholicism in the first wave of protests over plans to ordain women bishops in the Church of England for the first time.
The Roman Catholic Church backed their move, which was first reported in The Daily Telegraph, and promised a “warm welcome” to all Anglicans who decide to switch allegiance to Rome.

Senior Catholics are finalising plans for the English Ordinariate, a new body created by the Pope to accommodate Anglican converts who cannot accept women bishops.

The Auxiliary Bishop of Westminster, Alan Hopes, the Roman Catholic representative leading the development of the Ordinariate, confirmed the identities of the five converts today.

Bishop Hopes said: “We welcome the decision of Bishops Andrew Burnham, Keith Newton, John Broadhurst, Edwin Barnes and David Silk to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church through the Ordinariate for England and Wales.”

He said Catholic bishops would be finalising plans for the establishment of the Ordinarate next week, and promised a “warm welcome” to “those who seek to be part of it”.

Message from my wife

My daughter has a science fair project she needs some help on. From my wife:

I normally don’t do these kinds of things, but Antonia (our daughter) is doing a science fair project where she is comparing the social science data she collects in a traditional setting versus the data she collects on line. In order to do this, she needs only adults who are willing to participate in the project sometime this weekend. The survey will take approximately five minutes. The first page is the human informed consent where she outlines what the project is about, what the risks are, what the benefits is has to science, and what measures she plans to protect your anonymity. And if you don’t want to do it that’s okay too, because like I said, it is with great timidity that I ask, I hate doing these things, but science fair calls.

There is a very brief demographic survey in the beginning and then the heart of the survey is a replication will ask you to identify shapes to sounds and names. Very simple, don’t over think, just your first reaction. Antonia and the 2010 Science Fair thank you.

Iowans dismiss three judges

This is the story Harry Coin mentioned in a comment a few days ago. The story is huge, not only for the political implications — the removal of activist judges, but that gay marriage, a moral question with the deepest cultural implications, was the driver leading to their removal.

America values the public square, which is why the great debates about morality develop a political cast, even though they can never be reduced to politics alone. When morality and politics coalesce into a seamless unit however (Progressive politics for example), America runs the risk of becoming captive to ideology (and following the failures of the Europeans — fascism, Nazism, Communism, Jacobism, and other deceptions).

The American Founders however, in their great wisdom, realized that the greatest threat to liberty is centralized power which is why the restrictions of the Bill of Rights concern the government, not individuals. Iowans, to their great credit, showed us again why the Founders were right, and why America, despite our faults, is still the home of the free.
