[The following portion of a lecture (all of which I recommend to be read) delivered by the Very Reverend Josiah Trenham in 2007 I found to be a very edifying piece on how Christians can implement at least some of the counsels of St. John Chrysostom into our own lives today. Of course, this is by no means exhaustive, but it gives us enough to think about and to hopefully inspire us to dig deeper into the rich treasures of one of the great Fathers of the Orthodox Church. – J.S.]

Fr. Josiah Trenham:

In this last portion of my lecture I would like to focus upon what I perceive to be several areas in which Saint John Chrysostom’s life and teachings may render the 21st century Christian particular assistance. The Church finds Herself in this new millennium faced by unique particularities, which demand an articulate word from the Holy Fathers to guide us through the unique challenges of post-modern life.

Our Church must sever its relations with those churches and communities that trample on the principles of Christian ethics and traditional morals. Here we uphold a firm stand based on Holy Scripture.

Metropolitan Hilarion

In a groundbreaking address at Lambeth Palace before the Nicean Club that included the Archbishop of Canterbury, Russian Metropolitan Hilarion blasted those parts of the Anglican Communion experimenting with sexual innovations saying they threatened continuing dialogue with the Orthodox Church.

In surprise remarks that observers say embarrassed Dr. Williams, Hilarion ripped Western Anglican liberals who have deviated from heterosexual marriage calling it “an abyss that divides traditional Christians from Christians of liberal trend.”

Russia Profile Weekly Experts Panel: Another Attempt to Get Russia Into NATO?

For those of you interested in this type of thing, the Russia Profile site has a symposium that examines Russian’s relationship with NATO. Most of you will remember that NATO was used to declare war on Serbia (the first time America went to war with an ally; the first time American troops were placed under foreign command) under the Clinton administration. Carl F. Henry, the late Evangelical theologian and a good thinker, remarked at the time (this was the period where discussions on how Clinton’s White House infidelities would affect his “legacy”) that Clinton’s legacy might well turn out to be establishing a Muslim state in the heart of Europe. The author of the piece below is Srdja Trifkovic, an incisive writer who understands and can can explain the relationships and inter-dependencies between culture and politics. He’s worth reading.

Russia will never join NATO as a full member. Institutional integration is possible either if Russia ceases to exist as an autonomous actor capable of articulating its national interests, which mercifully will not happen (although the threat was real under former President Boris Yeltsin), or if NATO ceases to be an inherently anti-Russian institution, in which case it would lose its key underlying raison d’etre.

Some time ago, at the recommendation of the great Fr. Welzbacher of St. Paul, I read Andrew McCarthy’s The Grand Jihad: How Islam and the Left Sabotage America. It was an excellent preparation, or propaedeutic, for the controversy over the proposal to build the mosque complex at Ground Zero in Manhattan. And, yes, I think 51 Park Place qualifies as "ground zero" in the sense that landing gear from one of the airplanes struck the building.

As I listened and read about the "Cordoba House" proposal something about it sounded familiar. McCarthy described how militant Islamists of the Brotherhood developed centers for young muslim men which included an athletic program component. The nickle dropped. (Cf. Chapter 4. "Eliminating and Destroying the Western Civilization from Within".)

Today over breakfast coffee… I saw in the New York Post an article by Amir Taheri, which you should know about.

Amir Taheri is author of 11 books on the Middle East, Iran and Islam.
