Patsourakos: An “icon” of Stalin is sacrilege

Joseph Stalin portrayed in "icon."

George Patsourakos, an AOI Observer commentator, recently posted this essay on his website Theology and Society. In a news story that shocked Christians throughout the world this week, it was revealed that Joseph Stalin -- the Russian tyrant responsible for murdering millions of innocent people -- was pictured on an icon at an Orthodox Church in Moscow. The icon appeared in the Church of Saint Nicholas, and depicts Stalin with Matriona, the blind saint, in an alleged meeting between her and the Russian tyrant. Apparently this icon, whose author is unknown, had been donated to the church by a parishioner. According to a legend -- one that has been rejected by the Orthodox Church -- Stalin visited Matriona in 1941, and she predicted victory over the Nazi Germans who had attacked Russia. Her prediction turned out to be correct, and this made Stalin more religious at that time, but he died as an atheist. Although he was a student at an Orthodox seminary in neighboring … [Read more...]

Patsourakos: Islamophobia will end in the US when terrorism ends

Over at his Theology and Society blog, George Patsourakos, an occasional commentator on the AOI blog writes on the effort by the Council for American Islamic Relations (CAIR - apologists for jihad actually) to combat "Islamophobia," a term they borrowed and adapted from the homosexual rights movement that is used to silence the criticism of detractors. Patsourakos writes, sure, we're afraid, but not of Muslims as much as we are of Muslim terrorism. Stop the terror and "Islamophobia" will disappear overnight. (One consolation: The spell checker still does not recognize the word. "Homophobia," however, passes muster. This shows how when you say something nonsensical long and loud enough, people think it really means something.) Essay follows. This past week, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) decided to establish a branch to deal with Islamophobia (the fear of Islam and Muslims). There is no denying that many Americans have had a negative attitude toward Islam … [Read more...]

George Patsourakos: Get St. Nicholas rebuilt!

"New York state and its Port Authority officials need to hang their heads in shame," says George Patsourakos, on his blog Theology and Society. Patsourakos, a regular commentator on the AOI blog writes: The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center -- attacks by extremist Muslims -- resulted in the deaths of thousands of innocent Americans. Nevertheless, New York state and Port Authority officials are seriously considering building a mosque at this very site. To even consider having a mosque at this site shows a heartless and unsympathetic attitude and disrespect by these officials toward the innocent victims who were killed there on 9/11 by Muslim terrorists. Having a mosque at Ground Zero is a very similar situation to having a Nazi Monument next to the Holocaust Museum. Both of these ideas should be put to rest, because they are an insult to their victims. Meanwhile, New York officials have shown little or no interest in rebuilding St. Nicholas Greek … [Read more...]
