If Constantinople wants to assert supremacy over the entire Orthodox world, then it had better start showing some moral leadership by correcting those whose ideas erode the moral foundation of Western Culture and justify the worst sorts of cultural imperialism against the Third World.

Pat. Batholomew has access to the highest levels of the US Government, but never do we hear a word of reproof from him or his associates towards those who champion the devaluation of human life here and abroad. The arrogance of Hillary Clinton is breathtaking. Making human life disposable is moral crusade on the Progressive Left and our leaders don’t offer even a whisper of criticism. Instead, they coddle up to them.

(NEW YORK – C-FAM) In Washington last week, United States (U.S.) Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced that the United States would engage in a massive funding push over the next five years to promote “reproductive health care and family planning” as a “basic right” around the word. Clinton has previously stated for the record that this includes abortion. The plan includes potentially siphoning off funds currently directed towards fighting HIV/AIDs, tuberculosis and malaria. Commemorating the fifteenth anniversary of the controversial International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo, Clinton said there were only five years left to achieve ICPD’s goal that “all governments will make access to reproductive healthcare and family planning services a basic right.”

Lets remember the EP’s Words to Secretary Clinton, of course he could not exchange a simple polite statement -the Green Patriarch has to go further:

In addition to understanding what is power and might, you know as well what is holy and right. And your respect for the diversity of religious expression in the world makes you a champion of human rights and religious liberty

You see the same misuse of language here that you saw when Abp. Demetrios visited the White House but even one level higher: the vocabulary of the Orthodox tradition is employed rather than the vocabulary of history. Pat. Bartholomew’s words are nothing more than the attempt to influence through flattery, quite unseemly for a religious leader of his stature and certainly something you would never hear Pat. Kirill, Pope Benedict, or even Abp. Rowan utter to high placed political officials.

Again, this is another failure of Pat. Bartholomew’s advisers. It reads like it was scripted by an old time Washington lobbyist, including the hackneyed rhyme (“In addition to understanding what is power and might, you know as well what is holy and right”) which probably earned the writer a few atta-boys from his peers. They are tone deaf to the nuances of language in American culture, and you can bet Clinton saw right through it and read weakness.

Clinton does not know what is “holy and right.” If she did, she would not make abortion a centerpiece of US foreign policy. Presumably Pat. Bartholomew knows this…but you are left to wonder. If he does, then the words are servile flattery. If he doesn’t, then we are in trouble.

OTOH, maybe its because he has been under the Turks for so long that he does not know how people in a Democratic Republic think.

Andrew, it’s statements like that that makes me want to hurl my lunch.

Here’s another early christian work that I came across the epistle of Barbnabas. Read in some of the churches. Thou shalt not destroy thy conceptions before they are brought forth;nor kill them after they are born.

Fr, “servile flattery,” what a damning indictment. You’re right, those eparchies under the EP are most definitely in trouble.
