The Ground Zero Church/Mosque controversy has not been at the center of my attention.  Shame on me maybe but there you go.

Let the mosque be built where ever the Muslim community can purchase land; it is their right under the Constitution. It is also the right of those who disagree to move first and buy up the desired land or to outbid the Muslims who wish to build a mosque.

But ya know, I’m tired of all the whiny, hand-wringing, Orthodox — do something I say.

Let me make a pastoral suggestion…

St. Nicholas Church

St. Nicholas Church

Let the mosque and let us, all the Orthodox Christian jurisdictions in America, re-build St Nicholas not in its former spot but across the street from the main entrance to the new mosque.  And let us have services in St Nicholas–Vespers, Matins and the Divine Liturgy–everyday. Let St Nicholas become the “mother parish” of the American Orthodox Church with all the various jurisdiction committing themselves to making sure the church is always open and that in addition to the services it is staffed with men and women knowledgeable about Islam.

And let these men and women have a charge from ALL the bishops to evangelize the Muslims at this new mosque.

Just one priest’s idea but what do I know.

In Christ,

+Fr Gregory

In which a bemused observer tries to make sense of man, religion, and the state

Here’s my bottom-line problem with the concatenation of events and trends surrounding the Ground Zero mosque: I see privilege being accorded to Islam, as against situations in which the civil authorities have de-privileged Christianity and Judaism. The reflexive animus against America’s traditional major religions will be recognizable, in what I describe below, to every conservative. Yet in a situation where a very large group of Americans objects to the placement of a particular mosque, government authorities not only don’t privilege the objectors, they castigate them as bigots and override their concerns.

We can stipulate at the outset that none of the situations here is exactly analogous. The situation involving synagogues is not even in Manhattan; it’s in Brighton Beach. But in each case, the reflexes of the civil authorities have responded very differently, and the difference is telling.

Peter and Helen Evans interview Chuck Colson, a drafter of the Manhattan Declaration, about what the Declaration means for the larger culture. Colson discusses the necessity of protecting the dignity of life at every stage of life, traditional marriage for the stability of society, and religious liberty which protects freedom of conscience. The purpose of the Declaration is to build a movement, Colson says, that crosses confessional divides. Western culture is in “serious straights.” “Every serious Christian should sign this and promote it in their community.”

Why no support for Ground Zero church from Giannoulias?

Alexi Giannoulias

Alexi Giannoulias

Illinois Democratic Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias made waves earlier this week when he announced his support for the Ground Zero Mosque. Giannoulias’s support for the mosque isn’t particularly surprising; he’s far behind his Republican opponent, Mark Kirk, in the money race and can’t afford to alienate the White House, or risk no more presidential fundraising trips.

The people who should be surprised are Giannoulias’s Greek supporters, particularly those who call New York City home. You see, as Fox News reported today, the only house of worship that was actually destroyed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks was a Greek Orthodox church, Saint Nicholas. And while the mosque cleared city red tape earlier this month, Port Authority officials have been dragging their feet for years on rebuilding Saint Nicholas.

“We have people that are saying, why isn’t our church being rebuilt and why is there … such concern for people of the mosque?” Father Alex Karloutsos, assistant to the archbishop, told FoxNews.com. He said religious freedom would allow a place of worship for any denomination to be built, but accused officials with the Port Authority of making no effort to help move his congregation’s project along.

Unfortunately, they have just been silent — dead silent, actually, said Karloutsos, whose father was ordained at Saint Nicholas. They just simply forgot about the church.

I always welcome the emergence of new contributions on Orthodoxy and culture by thoughtful commentators. Orthodox Christianity has much to give this country, indeed all of the Christian West, but our thinking has been underdeveloped and our contributions sparse. Much of this is due of course to historical circumstance; Orthodox Christianity is only now finding its voice in the public square. We’ve seen the contributions primarily in the new media, blogs mostly, but also in journals and elsewhere. We see it on all levels too, from the academy to cultural gatekeepers to those of us who, as Hayek says, are “merchants of ideas.”

Fr. Michael Butler, a priest in the Orthodox Church in America, just entered the fray and, if his first few posts are any indication, it looks like a blog deserving a place in your favorites folder. John Couretas, Communications Director at the Action Institute wrote a fine introduction copied below. Fr. Michael blogs at the Ambiguorum Blogis.

Advising the Poor to Do Less With Less

By John Couretas

On his recently launched Ambiguorum Blogis site, Fr. Michael Butler is reviewing Elizabeth Theokritoff’s Living in God’s Creation: Orthodox Perspectives on Ecology (St. Vladimir’s Seminary Press, 2009). Fr. Michael, who joined us for Acton University 2010, examines the author’s exhausted earth meme, beginning with this quote from the book:

It is hard to escape the conclusion that with an ever-growing human population, it is not enough for humanity as a whole to do more with less; individually, we must also learn to do less with less (Theokritoff, p. 21).

Fr. Michael comments:

This statement is astonishing. It is a call to reduce our quality of life, and I find it hard to square with her concern for the poor and the weak, for whom learning “to do less with less” is a recipe for catastrophe. She says, on p. 19, “most environmental problems take their toll on the poor and weak long before they affect those who can afford to live far from the landfills, upwind of the factories or power plants, and well above sea level”. If the poor and the weak suffer in our current economy, their suffering in a reduced economy will be unspeakable. A vibrant economy helps everyone; poverty in the United States, for example, is incomparable with poverty found elsewhere in the world. The poor and weak will not be helped by making everyone else poorer and weaker.
