At the Expo, the Chinese authorities allow the Orthodox community to celebrate regular prayer services. Local communist officials also present at the ceremony commemorating the saint, who reunited the Orthodox community in the early thirties.

Shanghai (AsiaNews) – The small Chinese Orthodox community have celebrated St. John of Shanghai with a “moleben,” a solemn liturgy. The ceremony was chaired by Archpriest Alexei Kiselevich, rector of the Orthodox community of the metropolis, in the church of St. Nicholas.

Many foreign faithful in town to visit the Expo also took part in the moleben, as well as local government representatives. In fact the authorities allowed the Orthodox to hold regular prayer services during the universal exhibition. Patriarch Bartholomew

Turkey Hurriyet Daily News is reporting that Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew is optimistic that the Halki Seminary – closed since 1971 – will reopen by next year, following pledges by Turkish authorities. But will elections in Turkey affect this decision?

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew says he has a promise from the Turkish prime minister and related authorities that the Halki seminary will reopen next year, according to reports in Turkey’s Hurriyet Daily News. He says he has been asked many times why he has not moved the Ecumenical Patriarchate outside of Turkey to serve under better conditions. “As Turkish citizens, we are loyal, we love our country and we don’t want to leave.”

Israel has finally moved on from its fractured relationship with Turkey – notwithstanding the impression conveyed by some US and Israeli circles that the damage is not beyond repair. This week, the Israeli Minister of Trade and Labor Minister, Binyamin Ben-Eliezer made last-ditch bid to save the relationship by initiating a meeting in Zurich with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutolu. It went badly and was hotly debated at the Israeli cabinet meeting Sunday, July 4. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said he thought it was worth a try, but most ministers said that given Ankara’s harsh hostility, it should never have taken place.
