From Kevin Allen:

Let me introduce the new Ancient Faith Radio podcast Glory To Thee: A Chanter’s Workshop, with host Dr. Stephen Kouri, of Saint Luke (Antiochian) Orthodox church in Garden Grove, California. Dr Kouri is a longtime chanter and chant instructor and a trained voice musician.

One of the great needs in the Orthodox Church is the edification, encouragement and training (beginner and intermediate) of our Readers and Chanters in the Byzantine chant.

This podcast takes a “workshop-like” format and will train prospective chanters as well as improve upon the skills of existing chanters within the Byzantine tradition of chant. All eight irmologic and sticheraric tones will be taught and work-shopped (IE practiced) as in a live workshop-seminar format. Each program will focus on one tone and its plagal (companion). Each program will build on the other, with some theory, lots of practice and some Q & A. These programs are designed to be interactive. They are especially good for mission parishes and parishes that want to improve the quality of their chant and/or train new chanters.

I hope these programs will be an encouragement to your parish and I encourage you to encourage your chanters to listen too! I have chanted for a few years and have learned something new in each episode, when producing these programs.

Listen to the first podcast:

Fr. Reardon is an advisor to AOI. H/T: Directions to Orthodoxy

Although the scholarly publications of Dr. Williams may be cited as adequate reason for his lecture at the seminary, news of the plan to honor him is already prompting a popular consternation and even scandal.

I write only to satisfy my conscience that a grave moral duty has been met — to wit, the obligation to warn fellow Christians that they have embarked on a path that will lead only to scandal and disgrace to Holy Church. Indeed, this scandal is already in play.

Your Beatitude,

I beg your pastoral blessing, please. You receive this letter as President and Chairman of the Board of St. Vladimir’s Seminary, and I send it as a friend of the seminary.

I write to complain of the seminary’s decision to confer an honorary degree on Rowan Williams later this month.

Although the scholarly publications of Dr. Williams may be cited as adequate reason for his lecture at the seminary, news of the plan to honor him is already prompting a popular consternation and even scandal.

Outside of academic circles, this individual is chiefly known for his public support for sexual perversion within the Anglican Communion.

I write on behalf of two groups of people: First, I speak for the simple faithful who worship in our Orthodox parishes, those friends of the St. Vladimir’s who feel betrayed by the seminary’s decision with respect to Dr. Williams.

Second, I speak for thousands of loyal and believing Anglicans, in this country and around the world, for whom the public policies of Dr. Williams have been a source of pain and distress during the past seven years of his unfortunate tenure as Archbishop of Canterbury.

Some of these Anglicans, in fact, have been pursuing a path toward membership the Orthodox Church. The seminary’s resolve to honor Rowan Williams is causing them to reconsider their hope to join the Orthodox Church.

St. Nicholas Cathedral (OCA)

St. Nicholas Cathedral (OCA)

…consider attending the “Pilgrimage to Prayer” at St. Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral in Washington, DC (get map). Peter and Helen Evans, members of St. Nicholas have organized a prayer vigil on January 21, 2010 that starts after Vespers and continues until midnight. Come by yourself or with a group and read some Psalms aloud or just offer some silent prayer. Some people will be preparing for the March for Life, others will be giving thanks and offering gratitude to God, and some will be asking for a relief of troubles for themselves or their loved ones (See: All I Can Do Is Pray).

Orthodox or non-Orthodox, members of St. Nicholas or not — all are welcome. As the church is softly lit with candles only, the proper atmosphere is fostered to “lay aside all earthly cares” and to pray, to walk around and make a prayerful connection with the Saints in the icons, or to make prostrations before the relics and experience their power.

If you would like to read the Psalms, email Peter and Helen Evans (we2rone@cox.net) to schedule a time to read, anywhere from approximately 8:30pm to 11:30pm. If you come alone or with a group make sure to email us first so the we can open the Massachusetts Avenue door, which is the only entrance we use at night. Please buy several candles to keep the church softly illuminated.

Abp. Demetrios on the way out?

Met. Theoliptos - Ranking hierarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate

Met. Theoliptos - Ranking hierarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate

Metropolitan Theoliptos also wrote “Truly where are we going? Where has our wretched Orthodox Church been led? Where has the Church been led by the conscienceless shepherds? How can we want the faithful to believe us and to follow us when we do not practice what we preach?”

Metropolitan Theoliptos, one of the most prominent hierarchs of the Ecumenical Patriarchate also said in his letter that “If he (Archbishop Demetrios) is not in apposition to help two orphan boys ten years old, then it is bad that he remains in his position.”

+++++++++++++++++++++++

The National Herald reported on January 15, 2010 on the plight of two Congolese boys who were not allowed to join St. Basil’s Academy by Abp. Demetrios of the GOA (See: Archbishop Demetrios’ Handling of Request to Help Two Orphans Creates Crisis). The boys, born of a Greek father and Congolese mother, recently lost their father and their mother is dying of cancer. Having no relatives in the Congo, relatives in America approached the Archdiocese to see if the children could live at St. Basil’s. The answer according to the National Herald was no.

It was a no heard round the world, at least in Greek circles, and soon newspapers were buzzing with the alleged cold-heartedness of Abp. Demetrios. New York lost no time at damage control (See: Archdiocese Statement on Case of Orphaned Children):

The two boys who need a home

The two boys who need a home

Saint Basil Academy never refused to accept the children and has been in communication with the family over the past seven months. There was never any question of financial resources in accepting the children. The Academy has been informed by the family that they are currently working toward securing guardianship of the children in order for them to be placed at Saint Basil. Both the Archdiocese and the Academy look forward to receiving Kostakis and Demetris as soon as possible.

[…]

To portray the Archdiocese of America, His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, or Saint Basil Academy as being anything but willing and eager to assist this family is irresponsible and reprehensible. It is a shame and shameful that anyone would exploit the tragedy of any child, especially ones orphaned of a parent, through exaggeration, misstatement and accusation.

You would think the problem would be resolved there. Someone made a wrong decision, something fell through cracks, fix it and move on. But there is more here than meets the eye.

If Constantinople wants to assert supremacy over the entire Orthodox world, then it had better start showing some moral leadership by correcting those whose ideas erode the moral foundation of Western Culture and justify the worst sorts of cultural imperialism against the Third World.

Pat. Batholomew has access to the highest levels of the US Government, but never do we hear a word of reproof from him or his associates towards those who champion the devaluation of human life here and abroad. The arrogance of Hillary Clinton is breathtaking. Making human life disposable is moral crusade on the Progressive Left and our leaders don’t offer even a whisper of criticism. Instead, they coddle up to them.

(NEW YORK – C-FAM) In Washington last week, United States (U.S.) Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced that the United States would engage in a massive funding push over the next five years to promote “reproductive health care and family planning” as a “basic right” around the word. Clinton has previously stated for the record that this includes abortion. The plan includes potentially siphoning off funds currently directed towards fighting HIV/AIDs, tuberculosis and malaria. Commemorating the fifteenth anniversary of the controversial International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo, Clinton said there were only five years left to achieve ICPD’s goal that “all governments will make access to reproductive healthcare and family planning services a basic right.”
