Peter-Bouteneff

Dr. Peter C. Bouteneff, associate professor of dogmatic theology at St. Vladimir’s Seminary offers some reflection on the recent statement from the Church of Greece about ecumenism (Greek clergy circulate document on ‘pan-heresy of ecumenism’).

Dr. Bouteneff writes: Some of you have corresponded with me about the recent “Confession Against Ecumenism” emanating from the Orthodox Church of Greece. The news report about that document came one day before a second report about Archbishop Anastasios of Albania’s address to the assembly of the Conference of European Churches. It was impossible not to notice (and comment upon) the differences between the two texts.

Dr. Bouteneff is author of: Beginnings: Ancient Christian Readings of the Biblical Creation Narratives, and Sweeter Than Honey: Orthodox Thinking on Dogma And Truth (Foundations Series, Bk. 3).

Antiochian monasticism speaks to the current crisis…

From the Ochlophobist (one who has an aversion to crowds) website:

The following is very important. It was written by Archim. Touma, who is said to be the most influential monastic under Antioch. He is Athonite in spirituality, he leads the most traditional monastery under the Holy Synod of Antioch, and he does not normally comment on ecclesio-political matters.

Highlight:

And what is to be said about the canonical disorders that we’re up to our ears in over there?

The situation of all the Orthodox eparchies dependent on mother churches in North America is uncanonical. There is one Orthodox church in those lands whose situation is sound and canonical: the American Orthodox Church (OCA). This alone is independent and autocephalous and this is de-facto recognized by the other Orthodox eparchies. Its recognition, formal or implicit, by the eparchies depending on mother churches is clear and frank confirmation that the status of these eparchies is uncanonical and unsound. If these eparchies and mother churches on which they depend were to be logical with themselves and consistent with Orthodox ecclesiological and canonical thought, in the true sense of the word, then they would belong to the OCA or would at least enter into an understanding with it and the thorny crisis of the Orthodox presence there, theologically and canonically, would end. The simplest position and the most sound is for us to leave the Orthodox in North America to themselves and to encourage them to arrange their affairs themselves! We and the other mother churches are the ones who are complicating their affairs!

Ed: The analysis applies to all Orthodox jurisdictions.

Pastoral Care and the Crisis of Power

In the See of Antioch, at the current time, there is a confrontation, a crisis of opinion, and painful consequences may follow. Are the bishops, within an eparchy that is headed by a patriarch or a metropolitan as an ecclesial administrative unit, bishops over a territory and a faithful people, or are they auxiliary bishops (asaqifa musa’idun)?

The traditional position, within the Orthodox ecclesiological framework, makes the bishops within a single eparchy brothers and the primate (mallak) of the eparchy first of all the first among equals and secondarily the head of a local council, governed by principles and canons and made up of the bishops of that eparchy. This assumes that each of them oversees a territory and a people. In principle, bishops are not titular or auxiliaries, dependent upon the metropolitan or the patriarch.

But, historical events came about in past eras that divided some bishops from their territories and their flocks, as happened in the Byzantine Empire after the fall of some of its regions to the Ottomans. It was hoped at the time that exiled or refugee bishops would return to their regions. However, matters became more complicated and situations worsened and such bishops found themselves permanently exiled from their flocks. Or, the dioceses which they had overseen in principle were emptied of their Orthodox people. Continue reading

Writing on the RadioFreeEurope/RadioLiberty Power Vertical blog, Brian Whitmore suggests that there may be a little too much symphonia in a recent move by Russian Patriarch Kirill to work closely with the United Russia political party. Whitmore:

What motivated United Russia and Patriarch Kirill I to reach an agreement giving the Russian Orthodox Church an unprecedented voice in the legislative work of the State Duma?

Aleksei Malashenko of the Moscow Carnegie Center tackles the issue in today’s issue of “Nezavisimaya Gazeta.”

He begins by asking why the ruling party would want to enter into such an arrangement:

Why? Because United Russia desperately lacks something despite its triumphs in elections throughout the country and the overwhelming majority in the lower house of the parliament. And what does it lack? It lacks society’s respect. It lacks recognition as a genuine political party and not just an organization founded and coddled by the Kremlin.

Because the crisis will inevitably require unpopular decisions that will be endorsed (blessed) by the Patriarch as a means to temper society’s discontent.

Because the crisis might foment social unrest and it will certainly benefit the ruling party to have such a formidable an ally.

And last but not the least, because United Russia would like to share responsibility for its actions and transform the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia into Vladimir Gundayev, supporter of the ruling party ever ready with religious authorization.

Vladimir Gundayev, it should be noted, is Patriarch Kirill’s birth name.

So what’s in the deal for the Kirill? Continue reading

From the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese:

Harry Markopolos, Madoff Whistleblower to give annual Zoullas Memorial Lecture for Southampton Greek Orthodox Church

Harry Markopolos will give the guest lecture at the Tenth Annual Zoullas Memorial Lecture for the Greek Orthodox Church of the Hamptons on August 8, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. Print flyer can be downloaded here.

Harry Markopolos, the 22-year veteran of the financial industry who blew the whistle on Bernie Madoff and his $65 billion Ponzi scheme, will give the guest lecture at the Tenth Annual Sophocles N. and Louisa S. Zoullas Memorial Hellenic Lecture for the Greek Orthodox Church of the Hamptons – Kimisis Tis Theotokou on Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. He will speak on:

Blowing the Whistle on Bernie Madoff: Gift Wrapping & Delivering the Truth about the Largest Ponzi Scheme Ever

Harry Markopolos

Harry Markopolos

For over 9 years Harry Markopolos, a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Certified Fraud Examiner, diligently pursued the truth in the numbers of Bernie Madoff and his unbelievably huge profits. Figuring out the Madoff fraud before anyone else, Markopolos waved red flags and delivered detailed documentation to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2000, 2001, 2005, 2007 and again in 2008. “It took me five minutes to know that it was a fraud. It took me another almost four hours of mathematical modeling to prove that it was a fraud,” he has commented. He was repeatedly ignored by the SEC and relying on his own dogged determination and a small, tightly knit, team of trusted allies, he finally overcame the indifference of governmental agency and broke the scandal to the public.

The event, which takes place under the Great Tent on the Church grounds, is part of the Sophocles N. and Louisa S. Zoullas Memorial Hellenic Lectures of the Hamptons established by Nicholas S. Zoullas in memory of his parents, a prominent Greek business family who emigrated in 1947 from Greece after suffering through the German occupation and the Greek Civil War.

Fr. Alexander Karloutsos, the pastor of the Parish said: “We are honored to have Harry address our greater Hamptons Community because, like Sophocles and Louisa Zoullas who selflessly helped their Jewish neighbors during World War II, he too stood intrepidly for America’s ideals and the values of our Greek Orthodox Christian Faith.”

For further information, contact Rev. Fr. Alexander Karloutsos at 631-283-6169 or by fax 631-283- 6271, or by visiting the church’s website at www.kimisishamptons.org

(Ecumenical News International) — A group of Orthodox clergy in Greece, led by three senior archbishops, have published a manifesto pledging to resist all ecumenical ties with Roman Catholics and Protestants.

“The only way our communion with heretics can be restored is if they renounce their fallacy and repent,” the group said in a “Confession of Faith against Ecumenism” that they circulated recently.

“The Orthodox church is not merely the true church; she is the only church. She alone has remained faithful to the Gospel, the synods and the fathers, and consequently she alone represents the true catholic church of Christ,” says the document.

The signatories say they wish to preserve “irremovably and without alteration” the Orthodox faith that the Early Church had “demarcated and entrenched,” and to shun communication “with those who innovate on matters of the faith”.

The list of clerics backing the manifesto is said to include six metropolitans (Panteleimon of Antinoes, Seraphim of Kythira and Antikythira, Kosmas of Etolia and Akarnania, Seraphim of Piraeus, Jeremiah of Gortyno and Megalopolis, and Artemios of Raskas and Prizrenis, Kossovo and Metohia), as well as 49 archimandrites, 22 hieromonks, and 30 nuns and abbesses, as well as many other priests and church elders.

The signatories note that many Orthodox patriarchs and bishops have, “essentially placed themselves outside the church” by abandoning its “uniform, steady and unswerving stance,” and attempting to impose a “new dogma and ecclesiology” that all denominations formed part of the church.
